You’ve probably noticed that cloud computing has been all over the place over the last few years and it is the same case with point of sales systems. When it comes to these systems, it is really easy to assume that the only choices you have are either the traditional cash register or a cloud-based POS system, but that is not true as there are non-cloud-based options as well. To help you figure out if a cloud-based POS is something that you want, in this article we will give you some of the pros and cons of these systems in the hopes that they will make your decision easier.
Pro: They report in real-time
If there is one thing that really makes cloud-based POS systems stand out, then it is the fact that they usually offer in-depth and customizable reporting, data analytics and even some specialty programs created for specific projects and these include discounts, frequent customer programs, coupons and so on, and in some cases there are even programs that are designed for specific industries like restaurants, retail stores, gyms and so on. Sometimes these types of features are included in the main package, and other times they are something that you need to buy separately, but either way they are worth it because of the effect they will have on the overall efficiency. If you are someone that owns a business with multiple locations, then a system that gives you real-time reports on every aspect of your business is definitely a must.
Con: You will have to train your staff
This is a risk any time that you implement a new type of system in your business, and cloud-based point of sales systems are the same. The biggest concern when it comes to staff training is the extra costs. Because the training will take time, it means that you will have to pay extra shifts at the very least until all of your staff is trained. And we say all of your staff, we mean it. Everyone from cashiers, to waiters if you are a restaurant owner, and even your accounting team needs to be trained to work the new system because otherwise you will run the risk of having a part of the staff working the old way and some of them the new way, which can completely divide your business.
Con: You will depend on the internet
The whole point of cloud-based POS systems is that they need to be connected to the internet and will only work online or on mobile devices, and this can definitely cause a problem. If your business is in an area that doesn’t have a reliable internet connection, then this really isn’t the type of system for you. Something that a lot of people do is that apart from getting the most expensive internet package they also set up a second internet connection in case the first one fails, but this is definitely something that depends on your budget.
A cloud-based point of sales system can do a lot of good for your business, but it also brings a lot of risks. Hopefully, seeing a few of the pros and cons will help you make a decision faster because at the end of the day, it is up to you to decide whether the pros outweigh the cons.
